This weekend is the first big weekend of events in Chamonix, Morzine and Avoriaz and there are openings in Tignes and Val d'Isere too.
The Chamonix Mont Blanc Marathon Weekend started on Friday with the all new 80km Ultra Mont Blanc a qualifier for the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc in August. As usual there will be races for all ages and abilities including the Marathon du Mont Blanc and the Cross du Mont Blanc. Runners and hikers will enjoy our Hiking and Walking in Chamonix page and might find some routes for their own adventures.
In the Portes du Soleil resorts of Morzine, Les Gets, Chatel and Morgins the Pass Portes du Soleil opens the mountain biking season. Chatel will be the centre for this years festival. There will be demos from the Scott freeride team and new trails for enduro and cross country riders as well as a test centre where riders can try out this years bikes and even have a go on electric bicycles.
The Tour de France starts this weekend to. Later this summer the Tour de France will come through Alpe d'Huez as the world's most watched sporting event celebrates it's 100th edition. British interest will not be as high as last year without the presence of Sir Bradley Wiggins but the Tour never produces anything less than excitement . Guillaume built his first drone at the age of 12 and since then he has developed new drones with lightweight HD cameras built-in. We have had snow falling above 1600m all week and there is more to come!! This has reduced the visibility on the slopes but has made the skiing unusually good. So good, infact, that Flegere is going to remain open for an additional week.

As the weather has improved dramatically we've been out enjoying some of the great activities Chamonix has to offer. Although people don't often think of Cham as a golfing destination it does have a beautiful 18 hole course in Les Praz with one of the best backdrops you'll find on any fairway in the world.Hopefully this good weather will continue as the last big event of the summer is just around the corner; The North Face Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc.

Yesterday was the Freeride World Tour Juniors event which managed to go ahead despite the tough weather conditions, although by the time the event had finished less than two-thrids of the riders managed a line which consequently vetoed this event from overall rankings.

It seems that the Chamonix ban on wingsuit jumps on the Brevent and the Aiguille du Midi hasn't stopped the growth of the extreme sport in the Chamonix valley as already two wingsuit videos have been released of jumps off the Petit Drus. The first video (shown here) is of Russion wingsuiter Valery Rozov, know for his jump off the Grand Pilier d’Angle at 4243m, who made the jump from the Dru over a year ago. Another video shows Géraldine Fasnacht and Julien Mayer jumping from the same spot on the Dru - Géraldine is a World Freeride snowboard champ and professional base jumper.

In this video Epic TV discuss the controversial decision from Chamonix town hall to ban wingsuit jumps from the Brevent and the Aiguille du Midi subsequent to the death of Norwegian wingsuiter Jon Inge Hovda. The video interview calls on views from two Chamonix locals; wingsuit pilot Roch Malnuit and paraglider pilot Sean Potts (from Fly Chamonix). Both Roch and Sean agree that wingsuit flying has it's place in Chamonix and the wingsuit ban is justifiable decision from the Chamonix mayor.

The event was presented as a weekend of mountaineering education, experience and inspiration for beginners and skilled mountaineers but proved to be just as much a celebration of mountaineering.

Although the lower slopes do get quite slushy and in places the snow is getting a little thin most of the ski areas still have good cover and the snow in the high north facing slopes of the Grand Montets is still great.

The idea for Summit of My Life was born right here in Chamonix, Mont Blanc when Kilian set out on two world firsts, first traversing the Mont Blanc massif from East to West on skis,and then from South to North arriving in Chamonix through a mixture of climbing and running.

Vincent Descols, aka Le Blond, takes us on an epic journey as he he launches himself off the Brevent and flies down lines at speed with his wingusit here in Chamonix. These are some of the most impressive wingsuit lines we've seen and are without doubt reserved for the professionals - there are some very close moments indeed! Proximity fliers, like Vincent Descols, generally fly at a steep trajectory which gives the option to flatten out at any time to give themselves a bit more height when too close.

The sun is still shining but thunderstorms on Friday do threaten what could be a great weekend. The 10th Rock Climbing World Championships are taking place in Chamonix this weekend with climbers from all over the world coming to town to challenge the laws of physics and show that gravity is a guideline rather than a rule.

Despite all the sunshine and a lack of new snow the pistes are in very goodshape and the skiing in Brevent, where I was this week, was pretty good. It has been a great week here in Chamonix. the skies cleared on Monday and we have had beautiful weather with blue skies and lots of sunshine. The pistes are in incredible condition and the skiing is as good as it has ever been. There is great skiing in the off piste although you will have to walk a bit to find fresh snow as most of the powder has been skied. If you want to try skiing at a lower altitude then the cross country trails are open and well groomed and this week there is a Nordic skiing event in town.

The end of the French school holidays sees reduced lift queues and emptier pistes. The Vallorcine area has been particularly quiet with some nice snow. This week I have skied in Les Houches and Le Brevent/ Flegere areas.The snow in Les Houches was in good condition considering how low the area is and the pistes were quiet.The Cross country skiing in Les Houches is still excellent and the area offers great views of the Chamonix valley and Mont Blanc.

It’s been an amazing week skiing. Heavy snowfall on Sunday night and more on Monday meant that there was at least a foot of fresh powder in town and more up the hill. Tuesday dawned bright and blue and I had the best day’s skiing of my life. With more snow forecast tomorrow and Saturday, low temperatures, light winds and less people, conditions only look set to improve.

There is still plenty of good skiing in Le Tour and Le Grand Montets, which is where I went this week. Conditions over in Brevent and Flegere asre also still pretty good but the South facing runs in Flegere are definitely better in the morning before they get too soft.

Every year a team heads onto the Mer de Glace to clean up the detritus that the glacier has emitted, and that people have left behind. This years clean up recovered 4 tonnes of debris, and was undertaken with help from the Club Alpin Francais, the mayor of Chamonix, the UCPA, Mountain Rdiers Association and Lafuma, who ran a competition so that 5 members of the public could take part in the operation. The Petit Trot de Lyon is not a 'little trot' at all, it's a whopping 300km and crosses the 3 countries surrounding the Mont Blanc massif. Runners set off in pretty good conditions yesterday but have since been diverted slightly die to high winds and lots of rain.. see them setting off from the centre of Chamonix last night. The first to finish are expected back on Saturday morning at around 07:00!

This week's #TBT or Throw Back Thursday comes from the early 70's when Chamonix used to host the "Ronde Hivernale Automobile", in what is now the Grepon car park. It's basically a classic car race on snow & ice, so there's lots of side ways car action, interesting 70's hair do's and clothing. The race still goes on to this day although not in Chamonix, and next years it's being held in Serre Chevalier.

Glen Plake Back in the Mountains after Mt Manaslu Avalanche
One week on after surviving the devastating avalanche on Mt Manaslu in Nepal that killed his two friends, Glen Plake was back in Chamonix and back in the mountains with his wife Kimberly.
