Discover the latest Chamonix snow conditions
Chamonix continues to look impressively alpine as March settles in across the valley. Snow remains visible from the town right up to the high glaciers, with the dramatic skyline around the Aiguille du Midi and Grands Montets carrying a deep winter coat. After the busy school holiday period the slopes feel calmer, and the different sectors across the valley are offering reliable skiing with good coverage across the higher terrain.
Current snow depths are around 55 to 80 cm at resort level in the valley around 1035 metres, with significantly deeper coverage higher up. On the upper slopes above 2500 metres, depths are generally between 180 and 260 cm, with the strongest snowpack found around Grands Montets and the glacier terrain above 3000 metres. A light refresh of around 5 to 15 cm has fallen at altitude in recent days which has improved the surface on exposed slopes and higher bowls.
Temperatures have ranged from minus 11 to minus 5 degrees on the upper mountain, while the valley floor has seen between minus 1 and plus 5 degrees depending on sunshine. The freezing level has generally moved between 1500 and 2000 metres, dropping overnight and helping maintain good piste condition where grooming is in place. Winds have occasionally strengthened on the highest ridges, particularly around the Aiguille du Midi, though conditions have remained manageable across most lift served areas.
On piste, the best conditions are found above 2000 metres where snow remains firm and consistent through much of the day. North facing slopes are holding particularly well, especially around Grands Montets and the higher runs in Le Tour and Brevent. Lower slopes closer to the valley soften more quickly during sunny periods but still offer enjoyable skiing during the mornings.
The outlook for the coming days suggests a mix of sunshine and passing cloud with the possibility of light snowfall at higher elevations later in the week. Freezing levels are expected to fluctuate slightly but overnight temperatures should remain low enough to maintain the quality of the snowpack. Any fresh snowfall would mainly benefit the higher terrain which already holds the deepest coverage.
Chamonix remains lively through early March with regular mountain events, guided alpine experiences and a steady programme of live music and entertainment in the town centre. The atmosphere remains relaxed while the surrounding peaks continue to attract visitors enjoying both skiing and the spectacular scenery of the Mont Blanc massif.
Weather outlook as of: 9 March 2026. As I am sure you are aware, accurately forecasting weather more than two or three days ahead in the mountains is notoriously tricky. If there is a significant change we will update this section before the next full weekly snow report.
Chamonix is skiing best above 2000 metres where snow depth and surface quality remain strongest, particularly on the higher slopes around Grands Montets and the glacier terrain. Early starts will provide the most reliable conditions on lower pistes before any afternoon softening. With a strong high altitude base still in place, the valley continues to offer very good skiing as March progresses.
