Chamonix is the main town of the Chamonix Mont-Blanc valley and is surrounded by satellite villages that form part of this resort.

The rest of the resort is made up of towns and villages, the largest of them being Les Houches, the first town you pass by as you enter the Chamonix valley, which is a popular choice for families to stay because of the number of chalets available and the varied ski area it offers.
Chamonix is 8km further up the valley from Les Houches and is the main resort with two ski areas: Brévent, and the Aiguille du Midi (off-piste itineraries only).
Further on from here is Les Praz (3km) and the Flégère ski area, and beyond Les Praz is Argentière (6km), home of Les Grands Montets ski area.
At the top of the Valley is Le Tour, a tiny hamlet with a ski area that connects to Vallorcine, which lies on the other side of the mountain.
