Discover the latest Chamonix snow conditions
Chamonix is now firmly in its spring phase, with bright days in the valley and strong conditions still holding higher up. The contrast across the resort is quite noticeable, with softer snow in lower areas and a much more wintry feel on the upper mountain. It remains a good time to be here, especially if you are prepared to follow the altitude and make the most of the morning conditions.
Snow depths are currently around 40 to 80 cm in the valley, increasing to between 160 and 260 cm on the upper slopes, with the best coverage across Grands Montets, Le Tour and the high terrain accessed from the Aiguille du Midi. There has been very little recent snowfall, with only light dustings at altitude that have not significantly added to the snowpack.
Temperatures have been ranging from minus 8 to minus 2 degrees on the upper mountain, while the valley has seen daytime highs between plus 6 and plus 13 degrees. The freezing level has generally been between 2500 and 3000 metres, dropping overnight which is helping to reset the snow surface. Winds have been light overall, though occasionally stronger on exposed high ridges.
Skiing conditions are best at higher elevations, where the snow remains firm early on before softening into a smooth spring surface. Grands Montets is offering the most consistent skiing through the day. Lower runs and sunnier slopes are softening quickly and can become heavy by midday, particularly back towards the valley.
The outlook remains largely settled, with continued sunshine and mild daytime temperatures expected over the coming days. There is only a small chance of light snowfall on the highest peaks, with no major changes expected in the short term. Overnight cooling should continue to support decent morning conditions.
Chamonix continues to host a mix of spring activities, including events in the town centre, live music and outdoor gatherings as the season winds down. The quieter atmosphere makes it a good time to explore different sectors of the valley without the usual peak season pressure.
Weather outlook as of: 30 March 2026. As I am sure you are aware, accurately forecasting weather more than two or three days ahead in the mountains is notoriously tricky. If there is a significant change we will update this section before the next full weekly snow report.
Chamonix is offering classic late season conditions, with the best skiing found at higher elevations where the snow remains consistent for longer. Early starts are important for lower slopes, while the upper mountain continues to provide the most reliable snow through the day.
