Chamonix is looking every bit the classic Alpine valley this week, with fresh white streaks running down from the high peaks and a proper winter feel back in town. The Mont Blanc massif has been holding its snow well at altitude, and although lower slopes have seen some thaw and refreeze cycles, coverage remains solid for mid February. With a notable snowfall forecast on the way, there is a quiet sense around the valley that conditions are about to step up another level.
Snow and Weather Summary
Snow depths are currently around 90 cm at resort level in Chamonix town and between 180 and 230 cm across the higher sectors, including Grands Montets and the upper Brevent and Flegere areas. In the past seven days the valley has received roughly 12 cm of fresh snow above 2000 metres, which has refreshed the upper pistes and improved grip on steeper terrain. Lower down the snowpack remains complete but has been firmer first thing, softening slightly where the sun has reached during the afternoon.
Temperatures have ranged from minus 9 degrees at 2500 metres overnight to around plus 5 degrees in the valley during the day. The freezing level has generally sat between 1700 and 2100 metres, rising briefly during milder spells. Winds have been light to moderate, stronger on exposed ridgelines but not significantly disrupting lift operations.
Forecast models are pointing towards a more substantial snowfall from late Friday through Sunday. Current projections suggest 35 to 60 cm of new snow above 2000 metres, with 20 to 30 cm possible at mid mountain and lighter accumulations down into the valley if colder air pushes through as expected. If this snow dump delivers as forecast, it will significantly improve surface conditions across all sectors, particularly on the north facing slopes and higher itineraries.
