La Terrasse Restaurant Review
Trying out new dishes on the summer menu
La Terrasse has to be one of the most iconic buildings in the centre of Chamonix and the view from its balcony has to be one of the best, if not the best in town.
Mont Blanc, the Aiguille du Midi and the Glacier des Bossons fill your line of sight and lots of snap-happy tourists meander by taking photos of not only the great views, but also of La Terrasse itself with its pink-hued art deco exterior.
There are a quite a few stools out on the balcony but since we wanted to make the most of eating outside, our waitress was great and organised to bring one of the tall tables from inside for us to dine on.
Keen to try out their new dishes, the four of us chose from both the dinner menu and the tapas menu. There are thirteen options on the tapas menu to choose from and I made sure my favourite sticky sesame pork belly was on the list, followed by the new teriyaki salmon with pickled vegetables and the new beef koftas with hummus and mint salad. We added to the order with fish & chips, chicken enchiladas and nachos.
The pickled vegetables that came with the salmon teriyaki were great, as was the salmon - cooked to perfection, really soft and succulent. The beef koftas were also really moist and we all agreed we could have eaten another one each. The fish and chips was a really generous portion, with lots of batter and a chunky homemade tartare sauce. Thankfully we shared this between us as I would have struggled to eat it all by myself!
The chicken enchilada was filled with good sized pieces of chicken and plenty hot enough for my curry-loving friend, who likes a bit of spice in his food. The sour cream and refried beans were small but ample accompaniments. If you're ordering the nachos from the tapas menu, don't expect a tapas-sized portion - they come in a pretty big bowl and although you don't get any jalapenos you can beef them up with chilli con carne for a few extra euros.
The tapas we ordered were either €5.50 or €6.00, the fish and chips €14, the Enchiladas €12 and the nachos €9.50 all very reasonably priced for the size of portions.
In summer La Terrasse is open from 09:00 to 22:00 with food being served until 21:00. They've got plenty of seats on the ground floor as well as inside but you really can't beat getting a spot on the balcony. The breakfast menu includes some new dishes too - eggs benedict and eggs florentine. I'll be back there soon to try them out.
