Compagnie du Mont Blanc aren't shy about spending money on their biggest attraction, the Aiguille du Midi, which brings thousands of visitors to Chamonix each year.

As we reported back in July, there will be two lifts installed to replace the current ones at the end of the summer, and now it seems work has started on another feature.

'The Tube' is being built as a continuous circuit around the main peak of the Midi, and will be made mostly of steel, with some transparent sections. It's going to be accessible for disabled visitors and will allow you to travel continuously around the loop without having to go back on yourselves at any point.

Construction of The Tube is going to be the most expensive project this year for CdMB costing in the region of 1.5 million euros, and has created its own set of unique technical challenges; Not only is the altitude an issue for workers and getting equipment up there, but the materials used need to be strong enough to withstand the extreme temperatures and the weight of snow and ice that will no doubt form on parts of it.

Work is due to be completed in May 2016.

** Update 25th August**

During the annual closure of the lifts for maintenance in October / November, the two top cable car cabins of the Aiguille du Midi will also be replaced.
