It’s been a fairly cold but mainly sunny week here in Chamonix for the last quiet week on the slopes before the half term families arrive. Luckily with the crowds comes some colder weather and it looks like there is a little snow in the forecast.
What’s happening now
We still have a high pressure in control of our weather. Today we have another sunny day here, but this looks like our last bluebird day for a few days. The humidity is staying low today, so although we will experience temperatures between +2°C and +5°C degrees around 1,500m we will not experience much thawing. Tomorrow it will be cloudy, slightly colder and the air will be more humid. The temperatures will drop to around -7°C by Friday evening.
What’s coming up in Chamonix
Over the last few days snow had been forecast for the weekend, but this looks to have moved away from the Northern Alps over to the west. However some weather models are still predicting light snow for the weekend and Monday. This uncertainty is due to the high pressure area sitting north of us.
Temperatures will stay quite low, with a variance between +3°C and -3°C at 1,500m. It will remain cloudy for the next few days, with only light winds and there is no significant snowfall predicted.
Avalanche risk
The current risk of avalanches above 1,800m is moderate, 2 out of 5. This is due to the warming through the daytime. The most susceptible slopes are the very steep sunny slopes, in particular south, southeast and southwest facing slopes. The snowpack is moist.
Caution is advised and as always, if you plan to venture off-piste, ensure you have the proper equipment, up to date weather information and advice from the resort, and guidance.
