Christmas week has arrived in the Chamonix valley and the mountains are looking in good shape as the festive period gets underway. There is a proper winter feel around town now, with cold mornings, snow settled on the upper slopes and steady traffic heading up the lifts. After a gradual build through early December, conditions are starting to feel more reliable, especially higher up, and the atmosphere across the valley reflects that mix of excitement and anticipation that always comes with a Christmas in the mountains.
Snow and Weather Summary
Current snow depths across the Chamonix valley are strongest at altitude, with around 140 to 180 cm reported on the highest sectors such as Grands Montets and the Brévent Flégère area, while snow depth in the valley sits closer to 30 to 50 cm depending on location. Recent snowfall earlier in the week delivered a light refresh to upper slopes, helping improve surface conditions and visibility. Temperatures have remained cold overnight, with freezing levels generally below 1500 m, which has helped preserve snow quality on prepared pistes. Over the next few days the forecast suggests largely stable weather with cold nights and daytime temperatures hovering just below or around freezing at mid mountain level. Winds are expected to remain light to moderate, meaning lift operations should be relatively smooth. Lower runs still feel thinner and more variable, but snowmaking combined with colder temperatures is steadily improving coverage.
