Chamonix has a very settled mid winter feel as February draws on, with clear views of Mont Blanc and a proper alpine atmosphere across the valley. The season feels mature now, with a solid snowpack in place and good coverage across the different ski areas. Conditions feel reliable rather than flashy, with the focus very much on consistency, good grooming and strong off piste foundations at higher elevations.
Snow and Weather Summary
Current snow depths are sitting at around 70 to 90 cm at village level near 1035 metres, with 180 to 250 cm reported across the upper slopes above 2500 metres, particularly in the Grands Montets and Mont Blanc Natural Resort areas. A small refresh of around 5 cm fell over the past few days at altitude, helping to improve surface quality without significantly altering the base.
Temperatures have remained cold for the time of year, with daytime highs of minus 6 to minus 3 degrees on the upper mountain and around minus 1 to plus 3 degrees in the valley. The freezing level has mostly stayed between 1300 and 1600 metres, dropping overnight and allowing pistes to refreeze well. Winds have been generally light, though more exposed lift stations at altitude have seen occasional moderate gusts.
Skiing conditions vary by sector, which is typical for Chamonix. Higher terrain such as Grands Montets is offering firm, chalky snow with good grip and very strong off piste coverage. Brévent and Flégère are skiing well on groomed runs, particularly earlier in the day, with sunnier aspects softening by afternoon. Lower runs and valley descents remain open and well covered, though they can feel heavier later in the day, especially after busy periods.
