After a fair weekend with some sunshine, it really cooled down this week with a mixed bag of cloud and snow showers. We woke up to fresh snow this morning in Chamonix and there is more on the way.
So it’s lightly snowing right now down to around 1050m, this snow will remain light and intermittent today. The temperatures at around 2400m are going to remain consistent at -6°C. Tomorrow (Friday) will be more of the same with the snow increasing in the evening and overnight.
This weekend is set to be a snowy one, with around 15 to 20cm of fresh snow forecast due to an incoming low-pressure system. Temperatures will drop slightly, bringing the snow line down to 1200m by Sunday evening.
From Monday it looks like the sun could make an appearance and Tuesday and Wednesday are predicted to be quite sunny days! Slightly warmer during the day but freezing level remaining low at 1300m. Temperatures will range from -2°C to -6°C at around 2400m and winds will be very light.
Fresh snowfall and wind slabs remain the main hazards, with recent wet snow increasing the risk of small wet avalanches. Avalanche-prone areas are commonly found near ridgelines, bowls, gullies, and places where the slope angles change abruptly.
The avalanche risk is expected to rise but currently stands at level 3 (considerable) over 1900m in Chamonix. Caution is advised. If heading off-piste, ensure you have the proper equipment, up-to-date weather information, and seek advice from the resort or a qualified guide.
