Russian daredevil base jumps off Mont Blanc

A fearless Russian man has set a new world record by being the first person to base jump off Mont Blanc, albeit on the Italian side of the massif.

46 year old human lemming, Valery Rozov launched himself from the Grand Pilier d’Angle at 4243m on the South face of Mont Blanc and hurtled in freefall for 800m at speeds of up to 200km/h before landing on the Brenva glacier at 3100m.

Sporting a chic Red Bull wing suit, Valery was in freefall for around 35 seconds before opening his chute to float back down to earth. He had planned to land further down in a valley near the Italian town of Courmayeur but the wind picked up and Valery had to make a last-minute decision to cut his jump short and land on the glacier instead.

Valery and his support team set off on Monday and ascended via the Eccles Bivouac (3850m) and the Col de Peuterey (3934m) before arriving at the launch site at the Grand Pilier d’Angle in time to make his jump at dawn on Thursday 7th July.

Despite having to change his landing site at the last minute, Valery was thrilled at having successfully ticked another awesome jump off his list, “being the first person to jump from the Italian slope of this magnificent mountain was not only a fantastic experience for me but a great honour as well.”
