January has settled into Chamonix with a very traditional mid winter feel. The valley looks sharp and dramatic under clear skies with the Mont Blanc massif fully white again after early season snowfall. The atmosphere in town is busy but relaxed, with a mix of confident skiers heading high and others enjoying steady (if but hard) piste conditions across the different areas. The season feels established now, with reliable access to most terrain and a sense that winter has properly arrived.
Snow and Weather Summary
Snow depths across the Chamonix valley vary significantly by altitude and ski area, which is normal here. Upper mountain snow depths are sitting around 150 to 220cm depending on aspect and area, while resort level snow cover is thinner at around 20 to 40cm. There has been light snowfall over the past week, topping up higher slopes but not dramatically changing the base lower down. Temperatures have remained cold, with freezing levels mostly below 1000m and daytime highs in the valley staying close to or just below zero. Wind has been light to moderate at altitude, occasionally affecting lift operations in the highest zones. Skiing conditions are best above mid mountain where the snow is cold and chalky, especially on north facing slopes. Lower runs are firm in the mornings and soften slightly during sunnier afternoons but remain skiable with careful piste management.
