After a cold, cloudy and snowy week, which brought some great fresh snow over the weekend with a good low snowline, looks like we’re in for sunshine and good skiing for a few days.
We have a fabulous sunny bluebird day, today here in Chamonix and tomorrow looks to be much the same. The temperatures are cold at night but daytime today temperatures will be mild and up to 4°C tomorrow at around 2000m. It’s still getting cold at night, but the freeze thaw will result in icy conditions early morning, turning soft by the afternoon. However the weather will change again on Friday.
Friday onwards brings more precipitation and cloudy weather as a depression looks to be pushing its way in from the west. It currently looks like the heaviest rain/snow will be on Sunday and Monday, however only currently forecast to be snow showers.
This latest precipitation is likely to be snow over around 1800 - 2000m. Temperatures will range from +3°C to -2°C at around 2000m and there will be a gentle breeze on Friday, with winds getting lighter as the weekend progresses.
The avalanche risk is currently 2 out of 5 (moderate). Certain slopes have accumulated wind-blown snow, and where the old snowpack is weak, conditions are unstable. The most at-risk areas are shady, less-travelled slopes above 1800m.
If heading off-piste, ensure you have the proper equipment, up-to-date weather information, and seek advice from the resort or a qualified guide.
