Chamonix Ski
This ski and snowboard hire shop is only a 3-minute walk from the centre of Chamonix and perfectly located if you're staying in the Les Pècles / Les Moussoux.
March has arrived in Chamonix with the valley still looking properly alpine, especially once you lift your eyes towards the Aiguille du Midi and the Grands Montets. The town itself is clear in places after milder spells, but the surrounding peaks remain heavily coated and the high mountain terrain is in strong condition. It feels like mid season up high, with a deep snowpack and a solid base that has settled well over recent weeks.
Snow depths currently sit at around 40 to 60 cm at resort level in the valley at 1035 metres, with between 180 and 260 cm reported on upper slopes above 2500 metres, particularly at Grands Montets and on the higher sectors of Le Tour and Brevent Flegere. A recent light fall of around 5 to 15 cm at altitude has improved surface conditions on exposed slopes, while the underlying base remains well established.
Temperatures have ranged from minus 12 to minus 6 degrees on upper mountain terrain, with valley temperatures between minus 1 and plus 6 degrees depending on cloud cover and sunshine. The freezing level has fluctuated between 1500 and 2000 metres, dropping overnight and allowing good refreezing on groomed pistes. Winds have been moderate at times on the highest ridges, particularly around the Aiguille du Midi, but lift operations across the main ski areas have generally remained stable.
On piste, the best conditions are found above 2000 metres where snow remains firm and consistent for most of the day. North facing terrain at Grands Montets is holding particularly well. Mid mountain slopes are skiing nicely in the mornings, with some softening on sunnier aspects in the afternoon. Lower runs towards the valley are open where coverage allows and are best enjoyed earlier in the day if temperatures rise. Off piste conditions at high altitude remain serious and require careful assessment given the depth and layering of the snowpack.
The forecast suggests a mix of sunny periods and increasing cloud through the week, with the chance of further light snowfall at higher elevations. Freezing levels are expected to vary but should remain low enough overnight to preserve snow quality on piste. Any fresh snow would provide a welcome refresh to higher terrain and help maintain good cover as we move further into March.
Chamonix continues to host a range of early March activities, including guided glacier experiences, ski touring events and regular cultural events in the town centre. The après ski and evening scene remains lively, with live music and local gatherings adding to the distinctive mountain town atmosphere.
Weather outlook as of: 2 March 2026. As I am sure you are aware, accurately forecasting weather more than two or three days ahead in the mountains is notoriously tricky. If there is a significant change we will update this section before the next full weekly snow report.
Chamonix is skiing best above 2000 metres, especially on north facing slopes at Grands Montets and the higher sectors of Le Tour. Early starts will make the most of firmer morning conditions on mid mountain terrain. With a deep base at altitude and generally cool nights, the high mountain remains in very good shape as March begins.
