Chamonix is feeling properly settled into winter now. The valley has that familiar cold bite in the mornings, the high peaks are fully white again, and there is a noticeable lift in atmosphere around town as more lifts and sectors come into play. After a steady build through early December, snow cover at altitude is now starting to look more reliable, and there is a growing sense that the season is beginning to find its rhythm.
Snow and Weather Summary
Current snow depths across the Chamonix valley vary significantly with altitude. Up high, around the Grands Montets and Aiguille du Midi sectors, snow depths are sitting at roughly 140 to 160 centimetres, providing a solid base for early season skiing. Lower down in the valley, snow cover remains thinner, with around 20 to 30 centimetres reported near village level, so coverage there is still patchy in places. Over the past few days Chamonix has seen light but regular snowfall, adding a few fresh centimetres at altitude. Looking ahead, the forecast suggests another small snowfall of around 5 to 10 centimetres later this week, mainly affecting higher elevations. Temperatures remain cold, with daytime highs at altitude staying below freezing and overnight lows dropping to around minus 8 to minus 10 degrees. The freezing level has been hovering between 1200 and 1500 metres, dipping lower overnight, which is helping preserve snow quality. Winds have generally been light to moderate, strongest on exposed ridges but not enough to significantly impact lift operations.
