With the start of the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc looming, Compagnie du Mont Blanc have been forced to stop lift service from Chamonix to Planpraz. However, the Planpraz to Brevent cable car and the mountain restaurants remain in operation, and are accessible on foot or via the telecabine from Flegere.

During normal daily maintenance checks on August 22nd, lift operators discovered an "anomaly" on one of the pulleys of the Planpraz gondola. After consulting the lift manufacturers, the decision was taken to suspend all services on the lift as a safety measure from Thursday, August 23rd.

The main summer take off point for paragliders, and a popular viewing spot, this is sure to cause difficulties ahead of one of the busiest periods in the Chamonix calendar. Compagnie du Mont Blanc have given no indication as to how long the gondola will remain closed, but have ensure that they are making "every effort to ensure timely opening."
