Gendarmes were alerted to the discovery of the remains of a body found by a climber yesterday at 2,600m on the junction between the Bossons and Taconnaz glaciers.
An arm, a leg, and some climbing equipment will hopefully be used to help identify the person, should they have been reported missing at the time of their accident. Even if they had been, this is by no means an easy task as the body is estimated to date from 10-12 years ago; and glaciers are in constant motion meaning it is difficult to establish where the climber was 'captured'.
Climbers on the glaciers still find remains of accidents which happened many years ago, such as those of the Malabar Princess, an airliner which crashed on the mountain 50 years ago. Ice- and rock-falls, avalanches, and the glaciers with their potentially hidden crevasses pose a particular threat to mountain-goers.
