The PGHM has announced a round-up of the summer season in the Mont Blanc range for rescues and incidents, with a total of 32 deaths in the Valley.
Counting the four months of summer, the PGHM intervened a total of 350 times which is a figure slightly less than 2007. However, the number of deaths were up on 2007 by nine.
Apparently no records were broken (thankfully!) but the season will be remembered for two particuarly bad days. The 14 August 2008 saw five alpinists losing their lives in the mountains and, of course, the huge avalanche on the Mont Blanc du Tacul on the 24th August, which claimed eight lives and made national headlines.
As everyone prepares for the next winter season, let's hope the PGHM won't be heading for record breaking season.
