Virgin Strive Challenge 2014

Fundraising challenge and an epic adventure all rolled into one!

If running, rowing, cycling and climbing are your kind of thing then maybe this is an event for you to consider!

The latest physical challenge and fundraising activity from Big Challenge will combine all of these disciplines on a journey from London in the UK to the Matterhorn in Switzerland. A core team of 10 people will undertake the entire journey, starting on the 7th August 2014 and ending in Zermatt on 31st August where they have one day to rest before attempting to climb the World famous Matterhorn.

If you fancy running, rowing, cycling, hiking or climbing for charity then you can choose to join them on any one or more of the following legs of this enormous challenge!

  • Marathon 1 - The O2 Arena to Gravesend
  • Marathon 2 - Gravesend to Faversham
  • Marathon 3 - Faversham to Dover
  • Rowing across the Channel - Dover to Boulogne sur Mer in Nothern France
  • Cycle 1 - Boulogne sur Mer to Troyes in Central France (449km in 4 days)
  • Cycle 2 - Troyes to Verbier in Switzerland (598km in 4 days)
  • Hike the Haute Route - Verbier to Zermatt (180km in 7 days)
  • Final Climb of the Matterhorn - nonstop climbing for 10-16 hrs to reach the summit

The core team, made up of Virgin founder Richard Branson's son Sam and other sporting personalities such as the trans-Atlantic and Indian Ocean rower Fiona Waller and ex Wimbledon women's champion Marion Bartolli. Other personalities taking part in certain parts of the event include Jack Whitehall, comedian, Princess Beatrice and Jamie Oliver.

They will be undertaking numerous training sessions to prepare them for this challenge including a weeks training camp in Chamonix to prepare them for the final climb.

In August 2014, a core team of 10 people will strive to reach the summit of the Matterhorn from London, entirely under our own steam. We will run, row, cycle, hike and climb over 1,000 km and will be joined by hundreds of others across the different legs. The Virgin STRIVE Challenge aims to raise £750,000 to support young people in the UK develop the life skills they need to reach their potential.
