Chamonix feels properly locked into winter now, with the Mont Blanc massif holding a solid cover and the valley looking crisp and cold most mornings. Living here, it has been one of those steady seasons where conditions have built gradually rather than arriving in one dramatic hit. Right now the mountains look well filled, and the overall feel on snow is reliable and confidence giving, especially once you move away from the valley floor.
Snow and Weather Summary
Snow depths across the Chamonix area are currently around 260 to 300cm at altitude, with approximately 70 to 90cm down in the valley. There has been a small amount of fresh snowfall over the past week, generally in the region of 10 to 15cm above 1800m, which has helped freshen upper slopes without dramatically changing the base. Temperatures have stayed cold, with daytime highs on the mountain between -8 and -2 degrees Celsius, while valley temperatures hover just below freezing. The freezing level has remained low, often below 1200m, which is helping preserve snow quality across most sectors. Winds have been moderate at times on exposed ridges, but conditions remain largely settled. Higher terrain is skiing best, with dry, chalky snow and good grip, while lower runs are firmer early on and soften slightly during sunnier afternoons.
