In the last week we have seen yet more changeable and unsettled weather in Chamonix. We did get the promised cooler temperatures and great snowfall which was fabulous, some resorts in the Northern Alps enjoyed as much as 50cms of fresh new snow. We were rewarded with sunshine after the snow for a couple of fabulous days, then it warmed up and rained on the lower slopes and now it looks grey and cloudy, threatening showers today and the freezing level is hovering around 2400m. But that will all change again this weekend!
In Chamonix the freezing level has been high for a few days but we are in for a couple of stormy turbulent days from Friday. A pressure gradient is developing due to an approaching depression which will cause a temporary foehn, bringing with it a large amount of snow, winds at high altitude and much lower temperatures again!
Colder air will flow in, turning more to the north west so the freezing level will come down to 850 metres over the weekend meaning the lower slopes will benefit from this latest snowfall too. Currently we are forecast to receive up to 95cms of snow in Chamonix starting on Friday and continuing over the weekend followed by a sunny day on Monday to enjoy the new fresh snow! It looks likely to stay cold for a few days after the weekend's snow which is good news for a great skiing week!
This amount of new snow falling on an already weak base layer is a recipe for considerable avalanche risk, and winds up high will exacerbate this, so take great care and heed the warnings in resort if you are considering venturing off-piste.
New closing date for Brevent announced: The Brevent ski area will now close one week later on the 23rd April instead of 16th April.
