Chamonix is right in its element at the moment. The Aiguilles are plastered in snow and the town has that busy February feel without losing its edge. From the valley floor you can see good coverage right down to Les Praz and Argentière, and higher up the glaciers and north faces are looking properly wintry. The season feels well set now, with a deep base at altitude and consistent conditions across the main lift accessed areas.
Snow and Weather Summary
Current snow depths are around 60 to 80 cm in the valley at 1035 metres, with approximately 180 to 240 cm reported on the upper slopes around Grands Montets, Brévent and the Aiguille du Midi sector. Over the past week around 20 to 30 cm of fresh snow has fallen above 1800 metres, with slightly lighter accumulations lower down. This has refreshed the surface and improved conditions on steeper terrain and itineraries that had become firm.
Daytime temperatures in the valley have been hovering between minus 1 and plus 3 degrees, with overnight lows close to minus 6 degrees. At 2500 metres temperatures have generally ranged from minus 10 to minus 5 degrees. The freezing level has moved between 1400 and 1700 metres depending on cloud cover. Winds have been moderate to strong on exposed ridges, particularly around the Aiguille du Midi and the higher lifts at Grands Montets, leading to occasional lift adjustments but overall good access across the main ski areas.
On piste skiing is currently best above 1800 metres where the snow remains cold and well preserved, particularly on north facing slopes in Argentière. Lower runs into the valley can be firmer first thing and soften slightly in the afternoon where they catch the sun. Off piste conditions at higher elevations have improved with the recent snowfall, although the snowpack remains variable in places and careful route choice is essential.
