Snow Report 16th Feb 2023

featured in Snow Report Author Caro Blackwell, Destination Editor Updated

Not much has changed since last week, so keep doing those snow dances! We've had another week of dry and sunny weather thanks to a high pressure system over central Europe. It's been milder than last week, which is great for enjoying the mountain restaurants and sunny terraces, but not so great for the quality of the snow.

The high pressure system is moving and weakening, so we can expect slightly colder temperatures and some clouds rolling in. There's a chance of around 2cm of snow on Sunday, with the freezing level in Chamonix at around 2100 metres.

Skiing conditions on groomed slopes are surprisingly good and holding up really well.  The shaded areas above 2400m have decent off-piste conditions, in Grands Montets the off-piste is well packed but really grippy with great snow, quite moguly in places. The sun and wind have created some hard and crusty surfaces, with icy conditions in the mornings, in La Tour it's a bit icy first thing but by 11am the snow softens and is really good spring skiing conditions.  Both Grands Montets and La Tour are not too busy and if you keep off the main areas, you'll hardly queue for the lifts. The avalanche risk is a moderate 2 throughout the Alps, and may go down to a rating of 1 as the snowpack diminishes.
It's hard to predict too far ahead, but there are promising signs of a high pressure system over the UK pushing cold air towards the Alps. This could bring some snow towards the end of next week, with current predictions showing a fairly reasonable amount of snow on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, and into Friday.

Busy slopes this week!

We’re still in the middle of the school holidays here, so the slopes are busier and we must be mindful to ski safely and be aware of those around us.

We’re never too experienced to remind ourselves of The ten FIS (International Ski Federation) rules of ski safety, please read here.

To make the most of your time on the slopes, here are a few tips.

  • To steer clear of the crowds, aim to ski during the off-peak hours of 9-10am, 12-2pm and 4-5pm when the mountain tends to be less busy.
  • Be mindful of the ski school hotspots, meeting times and places and plan your route accordingly. If you must ski in these areas, try to do so at different times than the ski schools.
  • Make sure you and your children have sunscreen and sunglasses - you’re in for a mainly sunny week!
  • Make the most of your half-term week by exploring all the additional activities and exciting fun events available in the resort.
  • Be sure to catch the torchlight descents and fireworks displays.
