Snow report, 13 February 2025

By Caro Blackwell, Updated

We’ve had a week of changeable weather last week in Chamonix, with light snow on Tuesday over around 1,600m, which helped improve the piste conditions. Temperatures have remained fairly cold, staying well below freezing over about 1,800m, creating freeze thaw conditions. We have been experiencing fog and cloud cover with only limited glimpses of the sun.

What’s happening now

Currently we have light snow falling, around 12cm expected today, adding a little extra fresh snow to the pistes. The freezing level is around 1,300m, but will drop right down by the end of tomorrow. Winds are light, the visibility is mixed, but the light is quite flat. Temperatures will really drop tonight down to around -10°C, but it will feel colder.

The avalanche risk is moderate (2-3/5), so it’s important to stay cautious, particularly off-piste where the snowpack may still be unstable.

Looking ahead

Friday is by far the coldest day this week, with temperatures down to -12°C, but due to the light to moderate breeze it will feel much colder. This unsettled weather will be over by the end of tomorrow and the next few days are looking dry with a mix of mainly sunshine and a little cloud. This is due to a continental high pressure area, which is gradually moving east

Temperatures will range from around +3°C down to -6°C, with the freezing level sitting between 1,100m and 2,000m. There’s no significant snowfall in the forecast at the moment, but conditions should stay good thanks to the recent snow and cold nights. Winds will be light and you can expect crisp mornings and bluebird ski days. Don’t forget your sunglasses!

Busy week on the slopes

We’re into the school holiday time here in Chamonix, so the slopes are busier and we must be mindful to ski safely and be aware of those around us.

We’re never too experienced to remind ourselves of The ten FIS (International Ski Federation) rules of ski safety, please read here.

To make the most of your time on the slopes, here are a few tips:

  • To steer clear of the crowds, aim to ski during the off-peak times such as - early mornings, jump on the first lifts. Ski through lunchtime and enjoy a late lunch then ski again later in the afternoon when the mountain tends to be less busy.
  • Be mindful of the ski school hotspots, meeting times and places and plan your route accordingly. If you must ski in these areas, try to do so at different times than the ski schools meet.
  • Make the most of your half-term week by exploring all the additional activities and exciting fun events available in the resort.
  • Be sure to catch the torchlit descents and fireworks displays.
  • Always check the avalanche risk in resort and don't head off-piste if you don't have the up to date information, equipment and guidance.
