British Climbers Rescued On Gouter Route
British climbers forced to bivouac on Gouter route as rope is cut by falling rocks
The Gouter route is renowned for its rockfall, with this summer being particularly dangerous due to the dry conditions and warm temperatures.
The four British climber were below the Gouter refuge on Tuesday night when rockfall cut their rope. The four climbers then decided to bivouac and await help from the PGHM. Yesterdays bad weather meant the PGHM helicopter could not take off to reach the stricken climbers so it was decided the Securite Civile helicopter would depart from Annecy ready to fly by instruments in the bad weather. Dropping off two PGHM members the four climbers were brought back to the safety of the Tete Rousse refuge.
NB. The Gouter route on Mont Blanc is a serious undertaking and should only be attempted by experienced climbers or those accompanied with a professional mountain guide.
