A new 1000 metre climbing route was opened at the end of May 2017 to the summit of the Aiguille du Midi from the Glacier Rond.

Jeff Mercier, a member of the Chamonix PHGM, is well known for opening new routes in Chamonix and has decided to name this one "Red Devils" (the nickname for Man United FC) in tribute to the victims of the Manchester bombing.

He was accompanied by three others (David Autheman, Lucien Boucansaud & Gérémy Rakowski) and set the route over two days, on 16th and 24th May after running out of time to complete it all on the first day.

He described the route as "four exceptional lengths of very steep, mixed climbing with sections at 85-90 degrees" and said he anticipates it would take around 15 hours to complete it in one go.
