Work continues on the paravalanche in Taconnaz
If you've been in the Chamonix valley over the past couple of weeks, you've probably heard the helicopter working overhead near Taconnaz - we certainly have done and we wondered what was going on. Well, it's the works to replace the paravalanche at the bottom of the Taconnaz glacier.
Following an avalanche in 2006, the paravalanche proved it's worth as it broke the force of the huge torrent and avoided any damage in the valley, but the barriers themselves were damaged. Claimed to be one of the biggest projects of its type in France, the concrete blocks that have been built can clearly been seen from the Coupeau side of the valley. If you ever take a bike ride or a walk in the area, you'll see that they are absolutely enormous!
The building works, costing 13million euros, are well underway, with CMBH making several rotations last week with loads of liquid concrete, repairing and rebuilding the blocks.
