Tete Rousse glacial waters brought safely under control

Phew, we can all breathe a big sigh of relief at the news that St Gervais has not experienced its own version of The Poseidon Adventure.

The first phase of the work to drain the huge pocket of trapped water has been completed and pumping is due to finish this Monday.

A big operation was launched in August to drill down and empty the potentially dangerous naturally occurring reservoir. Almost 45000m³ of glacial water has been drained from beneath the ice, around 70% of the total estimated volume.

A pumping system will be installed sometime in 2011 to purge the rest and to prevent any more from building up.
