Team Set Off to Measure Height of Mont Blanc

Mont Blanc to get its biennial height check

featured in News & Reviews Author Robin Deering, Chamonix Editor Updated

Over the last twelve years surveyors have measured the height of Mont Blanc every two years, the last measurement in 2011 showed the highest peak in Western Europe was officially 4810.44m - so how tall is the Mont Blanc this year?

This year a team of 22 mountaineers and surveyors wil set off to measure the height of the Mont Blanc. The measurements will not only consist of traditional GPS tracking, using a series of GPS readings taken over a few hours to give an average reading, but also with a live GPS tacker.

This new technology tracker, from Hexagone, gives immediate readings and combines French, Italian & Swiss data networks to produce even more accurate measurements.

Initial and un-official measurements will be released prior to the official figure in October. Anyone want to place a bet?

Update:

  • First measurements announced show the Mont Blanc measures 4810.06 metres
  • Confirmed measurement is 4810.02 metres
