Springtime climate sets-off avalanches

No victims but caution is advised

Warm temperatures sweeping across the Chamonix ski areas were to blame for a number of avalanches over the weekend.

Springtime conditions spur number of slides

In Vallorcine the PGHM were called out when an eyewitness claimed she saw someone being taken by an avalanche on the Loriaz, just behind the tourist office. Fears were raised when an echo was picked up by an ARVA - after two hours of searching the PGHM declared the area clear of any victims.

Meanwhile the home run in Grands Montets was closed following a few slides that touched onto the Pierre a Ric piste.

Over on the South facing Brevent ski area a snowboarder was swept off his feet by an avalanche when off-piste above the Sources chairlift - he was rescued up by fellow snowboarders. The slide possibly influenced the decision to close the liaison to Flegere later on.

As reported earlier the Montenvers train had to be evacuated after an avalanche covered the track.

The current Chamonix avalanche bulletin indicates a risk level 2 but states spontaneous slides are possible.
