A skier has died after falling forty metres into a crevasse on the Vallee Blanche, on the Mont Blanc, due to a collapsed snow-bridge.

A group of six people were skiing the Vallee Blanche accompanied by a guide, when two of them fell through a snowbridge and fell around forty meters into a crevasse. Sadly one of skiers died instantly whilst the other man suffered leg injuries and was helicoptered to hospital.
There is no official confirmation of the route the group were skiing nor whether the skiers were correctly following the guide's instructions at the time of the fall.

Every year thousands of skiers enjoy skiing the Vallee Blanche however it is not without risks - the route is an unmarked, unmaintained, unpatrolled and unchecked high mountain glacier route and a crevasse rescue kit should be part of the packing list.
For those not experienced and not equipped the Vallee Blanche should only be attempted with a mountain guide.
