You know spring is in the air in Chamonix when along with birdsong the sound of diggers, cement mixers and other heavy machinery can be heard on the warm breeze. This is the time of year (as well as autumn) when the resort gets a bit of a makeover, whilst it is fairly quiet.

This time the action has been taking place in the river. According to recent findings by the Chamonix Mairie, the section of the River Arve may not be deep enough to deal with heavy flooding. So, the diggers that have been hard at work over the past couple of days have been digging out the river bed to lower it by 60cm.
