You may remember that we reported last year that Climbing Mont Blanc was to be policed, and for a second summer the gendarmes will be policing the pathways to this magnificent mountain.

In 2014 the gendarmes will once again be present to welcome and inform climbers on various access routes to Mont Blanc. With the Gouter Hut opening tomorrow (Sunday 1 June) the official climbing season will kick off and thousands of people will descend upon Chamonix hoping to summit the 4810m high mountain.

The PGHM (Peloton de Gendarmerie de Haute Montagne) who specialise in assistance to victims in the hazardous environment of the mountains, will not only be offering information but will be detering campers from setting up outside the permitted areas. Mont Blanc is a protected site and no camping is permitted, except for that at the Tete Rouse Refuge.

Authorities will give full details next Wednesday (4 June).
