We were blessed with glorious sunshine and pleasantly cool temperatures today for the 2013 Marathon du Mont Blanc.
Gathering this morning at 7am in the centre of Chamonix the atmosphere was electric as 2000 runners set off on a 42km jaunt through the mountains of the Chamonix Valley.
Covering over 2500m of altitude gain, this is no ordinary marathon. Attracting runners from all over the world, of all abilities, it truly epitomises the spirit of Chamonix. Everyone from the highest level athlete to the most amateur enthusiast gets supported, cheered and encouraged the entire length of the route - it is sportsmanship at its very best!
Coming 1st this year was trail running legend and adopted son of Chamonix, Kilian Jornet, with an incredible time of 3 hours and 30 minutes. He was closely followed by Marco De-Gasperi, who looked like challenging Kilian for 1st place at some points, but who came in just one minute behind - look out Kilian! In 3rd place was Hernando-Alzaga Luis Alberto at 3:36.
The winning woman was Stevie Kremer who came in at a remarkably fast 4:03, with Emelie Forsberg following at 4:25 and Celine Lafaye at 4:35.
Big congratulations are in order for everyone who took part and huge thanks to everyone who gave their support, it was very much appreciated!
