Earthquake near Chamonix

The earth moves in Vallorcine

featured in News & reviews Author Sophie Nicholson, Chamonix Editor Updated

Residents of Vallorcine may have felt the earth move last night when an earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale struck the area. At 03.11 local time, the Laboratory for Detection and Geophysics CEA/DASE recorded the seismic activity on the Franco-Swiss border between Chamonix and Martigny.

Earthquakes in Chamonix seem to be coming something of an annual event with seismic activity reported in July 2011 and December 2010: the epicenter of last year's incident occurred in Italy and measured 4.5 on the Richter scale while the tremor in Vallorcine in 2010 was a 2.9. No-one was hurt in either episode.
