The Alps have long been the playground of Europe, dating back to Victorian times when ever increasing numbers of mountaineers started arriving in Chamonix to challenge themselves in Europe's biggest mountains.

To celebrate this Golden Era (around 1865), plans have been announced this week that Chamonix will be celebrating the 150 year anniversary, and to kick off the celebrations an historical newspaper 'L'Abeille de Chamonix' has been produced.

You can pick up a copy at most hotels, the tourist office and a number of local shops, and learn about some of the history of mountaineering in Chamonix, including visitor statistics, previous records on Mont Blanc, the old ice cave at Les Bosson Glacier, some first ascents and the history of the Compagnie des Guides (which was established back in 1821!)

It's an interesting read, and a great souvenir which is available in both English & French. If you want to read more and find out what the plans are for the big celebrations next year, then take a look at the website.
