Chamonix is feeling settled and wintery this week, with the Mont Blanc massif holding onto its snow well after the heavier falls earlier in the month. The upper mountain looks smooth and well filled in, while the forests lower down remain quiet, giving the valley a calm mid winter feel. The season now feels properly established, and conditions on the mountain are stable and reliable rather than changeable.
Snow and Weather Summary
Current snow depths across the Chamonix area are sitting at around 230 to 250cm on the upper mountain, with approximately 80 to 100cm at resort level depending on the ski area. There has been no significant snowfall in the past few days, but light flurries at altitude have helped keep surfaces fresh. Daytime temperatures at altitude have been ranging between -7 and -4 degrees Celsius, with the freezing level hovering close to 1400m. Snow conditions are skiing well on higher terrain, with packed powder and well groomed pistes offering good grip throughout the day. Lower runs are firmer in the mornings, especially on sunnier aspects, and soften slightly by early afternoon. Winds have been generally light to moderate, with some exposure on ridges but no major impact on lift operations.
