Measuring Mont Blanc 2017

Europe's biggest mountain is only 1cm shorter than the last time it was measured

Glaciologists have measured the height of Mont Blanc this week, and have confirmed that the highest mountain in Europe is 4808.72 metres tall.

The last time they measured the mighty mountain was in 2015, and since then there's only been a drop in height of 1cm.

With global warming and glacier shrinkage all over the headlines at the moment, it's perhaps surprising that the difference isn't more.

A recent study suggests that 25% of the total surface area of the glaciers in France has been lost in the last 12 years and that erosion has been accelerating.

Mont Blanc's glaciers seem resistant to this erosion however, thanks to their higher than average altitude.
