1 Fatality & 2 Seriously Injured in Separate Accidents in Chamonix
A fatal fall for 1 skier & 2 people caught in an avalanche ski touring
Tragedy struck this bank holiday weekend as a young skier was killed in an accident at Grands Montets, and two ski tourers were caught in an avalanche in the Aiguilles Rouges area.
A 25 year old skier from Lyon died in an off piste area of Grands Montets on Sunday, after slipping crossing a rocky outcrop, and then hitting a tree. Rescue services took him to hospital where he sadly died from his injuries.
In a separate incident, two ski tourers were avalanched in a part of the Aiguilles Rouges massif yesterday morning, the exact location and other details are unavailable to us at this stage.
In a statement released on Sunday, the prefecture of the Haute Savoie warned of the high risk of avalanches at the moment, and advised that anyone taking part in any mountain activities should exercise extreme caution.
The video above shows pisteurs clearing the way for skiers on the Bozon piste at Brevent, showing that you don't even need to be off piste to be affected by avalanches. The avalanche risk is currently a substantial 3/5 due to a largely unstable snowpack brought on by high winds, snow and rain this week and the captain on the PGHM has also warned that people should be careful in these conditions.
