Accident Delays Traffic in Both Directions

featured in News & Reviews Author Sophie Nicholson, Chamonix Editor Updated

The Mont Blanc Tunnel was closed for more than three hours yesterday causing large scale disruption for traffic travelling in both directions between France and Italy.

An accident involving a truck travelling from Italy prompted authorities to shut the tunnel to all traffic at 14:25 yesterday afternoon. The lorry was reported to have jacknifed for no apparent reason just 300m from the exit to the French side of the tunnel.

Whilst the driver was uninjured in the accident which caused no fire or smoke in the tunnel, operators were obligated to immediately invoke strict security measures which caused travel delays of up to 3 hours.

The truck was finally able to leave the tunnel at about 17:00 and normal traffic resumed just over an hour later.
