**UPDATE** Via ferrata gear safety alert
As the via ferrata season is already underway it has been noted that a certain piece of safety equipment is not up to standard.
The manufacturer Petzl has said some of the lanyards – a special y-shaped sling for use on via ferrata routes – may be missing a bar tack which is an essential part of the safety system which protects climbers in the event of a fall.
The report was made after a man suffered a fall at the begining of May whilst climbing the Bastille via ferrata near Grenoble. An investigation followed to help determine the cause and effect of the fall - Petzl admitted " the accident appears to have been the result of a manufacturing defect of the Petzl Scorpio lanyard."
Petzl is asking anyone with Scorpio lanyards, manufactured before May 17th 2011 up to serial number 11137**** to return them to their local distributor. All local distributors have been informed to ensure they are aware of the faulty equipment and are not using such equipment. Please check the link below for full details form Petzl.
Via Ferratas follow marked routes through the mountains helped along by steps, bridges and ladders whilst being constantly attached for extra safety. The sport is open to all and guided excursions are possible.
