Meteo France offices in Chamonix and Bourg St Maurice saved...for now
Following our report in October over concerns that Meteo France wanted to close regional weather offices including Bourg St Maurice and Chamonix, we've got news that both office have been given a reprieve!
It seems those big bosses at Meteo France have presented a map showing the 55 regional sites that will remain in France after the shake up and Bourg St Maurice and Chamonix are amongst those. However, plans are still going ahead to close 60 sites down.
Damien Perry of the Bourg St Maurice office commented: "I feel relieved at the news. It would've been a serious error to get rid of this office, view it's proximity with the mountains and the need for accurate weather information."
We managed to put down our cup of tea and stop scoffing choc long enough to put in a call to the Chamonix office, like proper journalists, to see what the feeling was there, seeing as there has been no word in the local press since the strikes in October. Yan Giezendanner confirmed that they too had be given the good news, but with a note of caution said "Yes, we're staying..for the time being!". And it seems there may be some administrative changes in how the offices are run, but the in essence, we'll still have up to date, highly accurate weather info in the Chamonix valley and Tarentaise this winter!
