Introduced in 2007, Google's Street View technology has revolutionised the way people navigate around cities and now it looks set to do the same to ski resorts in France.

Google have announced that 12 French ski resorts - including Chamonix, Meribel and Les 2 Alpes - will be available to view on Google Maps using the 3D imaging technology. Footage of the trails and pistes has been obtained by cameras mounted on snowmobiles using a combination of GPS technology and 360 panoramic shots. Google Street View is already operational in hundreds of ski areas around the world primarily in North America, Switzerland and Austria.

So now you can do a recce of a ski run, check out what the mountain views will be like at the top, and find a nice spot by a lake for a picnic and a bottle of wine without even leaving the house.....
