Day 3 at the X-Games in Tignes
What a day!!!!
The skies were bright and clear this morning and the promise of a blue bird day on the hill, the Men's Snowboard Slopestyle and the Women's Snowboard Superpipe meant that it was going to be the best day of the competition yet.
The Slopestyle course had been completely reshaped and all the modules had been tweaked to ensure the safety of the riders and more fluidity on the course. It worked. All the riders were making the landings far easier than they had been on the previous days and the fluidity of the runs was greatly improved.
The line up for the final was a bit of a shake up. A number of the big names had not qualified but the starters did include snowboard superstar Travis Rice, Olympic halfpipe finalist Iouri Podlatchikov and new school rider Chas Guldemond.
Guldemond had qualified in first place with a strong run and was definitely the favourite going into the final.
However with the most consistent lines of the day that included a double cork off the last kicker the winner was American Eric Willett. Second place went to Sage Kostenburg of Utah with the Slovakian rider Marko Grilc in third place. In a move that was reminissent of the qualifiers, none of the favorites finished in the top three with Guldemond taking 5th place, Travis Rice in 7th and the I-Pod, Iouri Podlachikov coming in 8th.
Tomorrow sees the women take to the course and we're keeping our fingers crossed for another Gold from Brit Jenny Jones who was looking strong on the course with a smooth 720 and a switch 720. Good luck Jenny!!
This evening the Women took to the Superpipe for the finals of the snowboarder pipe.
Bright was definitely the favourite going into the competition but at the end of the first round of three American Kaitlyn Farrington had scored a massive 97 points out of a potential 100.
Torah was sitting on a solid 95, which had been her qualifying score and had put her way out in front but by the end of the competition Farrington's amazing run, which included a 900 and two inverts, was too much for the Australian and she had to settle for second place. French rider Sophie Rodriguez pleased a home crowd with a solid run that secured her bronze.
It has been a long but exciting day here in Tignes and too see more of it check back soon for our video coverage of the day including exclusive interviews with Torah Bright and Chas Guldemond.
