Chamonix to Zermatt in Record Time

featured in News & Reviews Author Alison Shayler, Chamonix Reporter Updated

A mere 20 hours 28 minutes and 5 seconds sets the new world record for the Haute Route.

Frenchmen Laurent Fabre and Yann Gachet arrived in Zermatt a whooping 43 minutes ahead of the previous ski touring record.

The route from Chamonix to Zermatt, known as the Haute Route, requires good weather, good snow conditions, technical experience and a lot of effort to complete. In normal conditions the route is done in 7 days – here it was done in less than 1!

The team set off with three members but one member dropped out along the route possibly due to the bad weather they experienced along the way. The team are all members of the French Ecole Miliaire de Haute Montagne and this was their second attempt at breaking the record with the first attempt being halted by bad weather.

New Record Chamonix – Zermatt: 20hrs 28mins 05secs

Mission accomplished!
