Snow Report 7/12/22

featured in Snow Report Author Caro Blackwell, Destination Editor Updated

Ok so winter has arrived and with it the snow and very cold weather here in Chamonix. Regular snowfall is in the forecast and the accumulation of snow continues.

After good snowfall on Sunday we have a top snow depth of 110cm. The next snow is currently reported for Friday and could be as much as 30-40cms. Snow looks to continue for a few days. The freeze thaw conditions for the next week range from a maximum of -3°C and down to a minimum of -18°C by Sunday evening.

It’s exciting to see the resorts all white again, the town getting ready for the season and restaurants and shops beginning to open in readiness for the opening of the Chamonix resorts on 17th December. Grands Montets will open this weekend the 10th December.

There's quite a mix of snow quality out there, soft and powdery on the high north facing slopes but where it's windy the snow is a little hard and icy. The latest snowfall was below 1500m and as it is so cold out there the snow cannons can be run. If you are ski touring in the Chamonix area, take care out there as some lower areas only have thin snow cover and you could encounter rocks and dips.
