Snow Report 29/12/22
Happy New Year! It’s time for fireworks, mulled wine and torchlit descents. One of the busiest weeks of the year has arrived and crowds have descended on the slopes. It's that in between week when you don’t know what day it is, but that’s not really important here in the mountains when every day is a ski day!
Current conditions out there is good snow up at the top, but it’s icy lower down with hard packed snow.
A moderate snowfall is expected tonight with more light snowfall during tomorrow and into the night, up to around 15cm of new snow from 1800 metres. The temperatures remain quite mild for this time of year with the freezing level at around 1900 metres Friday night but up at around 3300 metres over the weekend. Next week the temperatures will drop down to a maximum of -14°C on Tuesday right up at the top and the freezing level goes down to 1350 metres.
Flegere has around 150cm of snow depth at 2385 metres, but there is very little snow at Chamonix town level. The avalanche risk levels remain considerable so take care if you really must venture off the pistes especially at altitude, maybe best to stick to the marked pistes with the current weather conditions.
Check below and before you go out for the current lift status and runs open, as of today it looks like 48 of the 124 pistes are open in the Chamonix area.
What's coming up
If you are heading out to celebrate New Year’s Eve - book now! The bars and restaurants only have limited space, the resort is full and some are offering 2 sittings. You will find it difficult to get into places if you haven’t booked in advance.
January is a great time to come and ski. The snow is in good condition, the slopes are quieter, accommodation is normally better value and flights are cheaper. It’s easier to get your favourite table in your preferred mountain restaurant in January. So if you haven’t planned your winter ski holiday yet, check out some of the great chalets and offers in Chamonix
