Fresh Snow and Blue Skies

It's oh so quiet!

featured in Snow Report Author Jen Tsang, Resort Reporter Updated

This week has officially been the quietest one of the season so far.

The early January weeks after Christmas and New Year are often some of the most peaceful - and historically have got some of the best snow! Early January is looking exceptionally quiet this year as we are still waiting for our British crowds to arrive.

Snow Report
When I wrote the snow report last week, it was a strange mixture of snow and rain throughout the mid and lower levels of Chamonix. Strangely, the warm temperatures and rain have not destroyed the snow conditions. The roads and walkways were super slippery and icy, but the pistes stayed in pretty good shape. The off-piste conditions were understandably ropey, with the security teams out detonating controlled avalanches to keep the ski areas safe.

It has to be the quieter pistes that helped maintain the snow conditions throughout the week. Although New Year week was super busy in comparison to the previous couple of weeks - and this week, it was nothing compared to the 2019/20 seasons.

Snow Forecast
Writing this on Wednesday 5th Jan, we had about 10cms snow fall last night and continuing on and off today. Thursday, we expect the sun to come out - and it could be pretty amazing on the slopes! So with fresh snow, cold temperatures and blue skies, I know I’m planning on being on the first lifts!
The snow is coming back in from Friday throughout the weekend, and although not in the huge amounts we saw in early December, we are looking forward to about 10 - 20 cms per day over Friday / Saturday / Sunday. Early next week looks like sunny skies are making a comeback, so we should be on for some fab ski conditions if you are visiting us next week.

Jen’s Top Tips

  • Head out early in the morning. The fresh snow is on top of hard packed snow and/or icy pistes. So early morning fresh corduroy is really nice! But by midday and into the afternoon conditions are more chopped up.
  • Some of the French ski schools are still out in force with school groups. So avoid the traditional routes they take around the resort.
  • Cloudy skies or snow falling - head lower, between trees if you can. Visibility is often better and you are more protected from the elements.
  • Sunny skies - head wherever you want! BUT if you’re heading off piste, get yourself a guide and keep safe!
