Chamonix Climbing World Cup 2017

Only the lead climbing competition will take place this year

This year's Climbing World Cup will be taking place in Chamonix on 12th and 13th July and with the lead climbing wall already set up in the centre of town, it's time to take a look at the programme for this year's event.

More than 12,000 people normally attend the finals of the competitions at Place Mont Blanc (see map above) to watch both the lead and the speed climbing events. Sadly for this year, the speed climbing part of the event has been cancelled due to financial difficulties.

In a statement on the IFSC website from 8th June, they said "The IFSC Speed World Cup, originally scheduled for July 12-13th, has been cancelled. Due to unforeseen financial circumstances, the FFME has regretfully informed the IFSC that it will not be able to host the Speed World Cup in Chamonix. The organisers advise...that the Lead World Cup will continue as planned...Should there be any changes these will be made available as soon as possible."

The programme has therefore been adjusted accordingly:

The routes have yet to be set on the wall, so it will be interesting to see what challenges the competitors face this year.
